Raytek Corporation, the leading manufacturer of temperature-related measurement devices wanted an introduction to the consumer market for the recent launch of the MiniTemp. Previous distribution of the non-contact temperature gauges had targeted professional trade industries.

The new “point-and-shoot” version was designed to reach consumers, from the DIY handyman to the backyard mechanic. The Kotchen Group would meet the challenge with temp tips around the house, in the kitchen and even under the car!

The first step was to determine the “killer apps” for a point-and-shoot temperature gun. Two areas were targeted: automotive repair, and energy savings. Our objective was to position the MiniTemp as a “must have” tool for the handyman who has everything.

The Kotchen Group created a variety story angles utilizing automotive reporters, and consumer experts to showcase the product on national network-affiliated news programs. The MiniTemp was featured on the following television media tours: Home Energy Savings, Fall Car Care and Father Day Gift Gadgets. A “MiniTemp -Test Drive” product testing program was designed for syndicated automotive editors. In addition an auto temp tip guide home-energy checklist, was distributed and pitched to national press

The Raytek MiniTemp was endorsed by third-party home improvement and automotive experts on network affiliate news programs in over 35 markets. The broadcast media coverage yielded over 3 million impressions. Syndicated stories from Creators Syndicate Gannet, Associated Press, Motor News Media, and Motor Matters blanketed the national media landscape with over 100 stories and over 4 million media impressions. The MiniTemp also appeared as a “cool gadget gift” in national magazines including Home, Esquire, Playboy, Go Boating, and Auto Age.

Retail distributors increased orders by 20%. The MiniTemp garnered both HOT and COOL media attention!
